Each year, National SBDC Day provides an opportunity to celebrate the impact of Small Business Development Centers across the country. It is a moment to recognize our staff who make our work possible and the long-standing history of a program that has helped shape America’s small-business landscape for more than four decades.
At the Tennessee Small Business Development Centers (TSBDC), National SBDC Day is more than a celebration, it is a reminder of why we do what we do and the role we play in strengthening communities across our state.
The History of the SBDC Program
The SBDC program was established by Congress in 1980 to provide small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs with access to high-quality, no-cost business advising and training. Hosted by higher education institutions and funded in partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and state and local partners, SBDCs were designed to bring expert guidance directly to the communities that need it most.
From the beginning, the mission has been clear: help small businesses start, grow, and thrive.
Over the decades, the national SBDC network has grown into the most comprehensive small business assistance network in the United States. With over 1,000 locations nationwide, SBDCs collectively help launch thousands of new businesses each year, support business expansions, drive capital investment, and create and retain jobs in communities of every size.
The strength of the SBDC model lies in its local delivery and national support, combining federal resources with state leadership, higher education partnerships, and community collaboration to meet entrepreneurs where they are.
The TSBDC Commitment to Tennessee
Since 1984, that mission has come to life in Tennessee through the work of the TSBDC network. With (14) centers, (2) affiliate locations, and multiple satellite offices located across the state, we provide confidential, no-cost business advising and practical training to entrepreneurs in every corner of Tennessee.
From rural main streets to urban innovation hubs, TSBDC consultants work side-by-side with entrepreneurs to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and make informed decisions.
Driving Economic Impact Across the State
Small businesses are the backbone of Tennessee’s economy. They create jobs, spark innovation, and keep local communities vibrant. The work of the TSBDC directly contributes to that economic vitality.
Each year, businesses assisted by the TSBDC generate measurable results, including new business starts, job creation and retention, and significant capital investment.
