Jerry and Julie Burris – Whisper Ridge Outdoor LLC
Whisper Ridge Outdoor is proudly owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Jerry and Julie Burris, both U.S. Army veterans who share a passion for the outdoors. Whether they are hiking trails, camping under the stars along a quiet lakeside, or gathering around a campfire to roast marshmallows, nothing recharges them more than time spent in nature. In a world full of screens and schedules, they’re on a mission to inspire everyone to unplug, breathe the fresh air, and rediscover the joy of the outdoors.
South Knoxville families currently face a 25–30-minute drive to West Knoxville for quality outdoor gear and apparel. That’s about to change. Jerry and Julie are looking to open Whisper Ridge Outdoor in South Knoxville, a veteran-owned, full-service store stocked with trusted brands, built to serve our community and fuel every adventure. With Ijams Nature Center, Baker Creek Preserve, and the Great Smoky Mountains just down the road, they’re not just selling gear, they’re building relationships, strengthening the local economy, and giving back. Every purchase supports veteran causes, conservation efforts, and the preservation of the places they love.
David and Onnicha Dickens – A-Thai Food
After years of serving in the Marine Corps , David and Onnicha Dickens carried forward the values of dedication, hard work, and community into civilian life. These values inspired them to start A-Thai Food Truck, where their family shares authentic Thai flavors made with love and tradition. Every dish is a reflection of our culture and a way to bring people together through good food and warm hospitality.
A-Thai Food Truck was born from the simple idea of making fresh, flavorful Thai food accessible to everyone in their community. David and Onnicha saw a need for authentic Asian cuisine in the Maryville area — something made from scratch, using real ingredients, and served with heart. Ralph Knutson – Kickin Up Dust Woodworks and Home Furnishing
Ralph Knutson is the owner, operator, and sole craftsman behind Kickin Up Dust, a Tennessee-based workshop where every piece is built by hand with heart. His woodworking journey began in Utah in January 2020, sparked by a simple love for whittling and the satisfaction of shaping wood with his own hands. That spark quickly grew into a passion for building home décor and custom furnishings—each project deepening his connection to the craft.
Before discovering woodworking, Ralph served in the United States Air Force from 1995 to 1998, including a tour during Operation Desert Storm. Stationed at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, he developed the discipline, precision, and sense of duty that now shape every piece he builds. His military service instilled in him a deep respect for integrity and craftsmanship—values that continue to guide his work today.
After relocating to Tennessee, Ralph joined Riverwoods Home Furnishing, where he found not just a job, but a calling. The work felt natural, fulfilling, and joyful—so much so that when the company closed its doors, Ralph didn’t hesitate to carry the torch forward. He founded Kickin Up Dust Woodworks and Home Furnishings to continue doing what he loves: creating meaningful, handcrafted pieces that bring homes to life.
Ralph specializes in custom furniture and rustic décor, using only premium hardwoods like oak, maple, and hickory, along with reclaimed barnwood that adds depth, texture, and history to every build. His designs are thoughtful, his execution precise, and his commitment unwavering. Every piece is made by Ralph himself—no shortcuts, no mass production, just honest craftsmanship and a deep respect for the materials.
Chrystie Shawhan
Chrystie joined the U.S. Air Force in 1994 as a medic to seek out opportunities to serve and carry on the legacy her family had already forged for her. It was during her service that she met her now husband John, who was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. As their time in service ended, they chose East Tenn as their forever home. They were drawn to the area, not just because of the natural beauty around them, but the amazing veteran community. It afforded them the opportunity to continue to serve their brethren and raise their family.
They began their journey in an effort to use their skills to support a local veteran suicide prevention nonprofit. They also wanted to share these skills with their children to carry on the trade and potentially build a legacy for them. The goal of their offerings is to create opportunities for connection and relaxation: a fire pit provides a space to unplug from technology and reconnect with loved ones, fostering strong social bonds and relaxation. These custom bourbon barrel fire pits create a unique focal point to your outside leisure area. With your own custom design, it will be a standout conversation piece and a stunning visual element in your backyard.
Harold Wilson – J First Properties LLC
Harold Wilson would like to create a housing program for veterans and people who have been released from prison. Many of these individuals struggle to find affordable places to live, making it hard for them to adjust to life outside of the military or prison. Harold’s aim is to set up a program that helps these people stay motivated while they look for jobs or even start their own businesses.
This program will ease the burden of worrying about where to live and how to pay rent each month, allowing them to focus on their goals. It will also help him identify those who may not be interested in taking advantage of their services. By doing this, Harold hopes to reduce the number of people returning to prison and show them that there are legal job opportunities or business ventures that can provide a decent living.
