Classic Finishes

After more than two decades in the coatings and construction industry, Henley Richards reached a point where experience met ambition. In August 2023, he founded Classic Finishes, a full-service commercial and residential painting and wallcovering contractor built on a clear vision: deliver exceptional craftsmanship, strong project management, and premium-quality results for clients across Tennessee and beyond. Drawing on his background as a Commercial Senior Sales Representative with Sherwin-Williams, Henley launched the business with deep technical knowledge and a strong understanding of large-scale project execution. 

Making the transition from corporate leadership to business ownership, however, presented a new set of challenges. While Henley was well versed in commercial coating specifications, client relationships, and complex projects, building a financially sound and scalable company required new systems, clearer financial structure, and long-term planning. As Classic Finishes secured its first major contracts, including a more than 100,000-square-foot interior and exterior painting project for B.J’s Whole Sale Club, the need for accurate financial projections and operational discipline became critical. 

Henley turned to the Tennessee Small Business Development Center to strengthen the foundation of his new business. His engagement began with participation in a co-sponsored Construction Management Series, an eight-session program led by a major construction firm that addressed key areas such as project management, bonding, estimating, safety, finance, and accounting. Building on that training, Henley worked directly with TSBDC advisors to enhance financial management practices, complete QuickBooks training, develop clear financial projections, and organize documentation needed to properly position the business for future financing and sustainable growth. 

With TSBDC’s guidance, Classic Finishes emerged with a stronger operational framework and a clearer financial picture. The business continues to build a solid reputation through its skilled team, commitment to premium materials, and ability to deliver complex commercial projects on time and within budget. Early successes, including the Wholesale Club project, reflect both Henley’s decades of industry experience and the strategic structure established through TSBDC support. 

Today, Classic Finishes is positioned for continued growth in both commercial and residential markets, grounded in craftsmanship and strengthened by disciplined business management. Reflecting on the experience, Henley Richards shared, “The TSBDC played a critical role in helping me understand the financial side of my business.
