SUCCESS STORY FOR
Amanda Lovegrove and Leah Hunter of The Backyard
The Backyard is a dog park and beer garden that combines a fun environment for humans and their hounds. It’s a new venture for Amanda Lovegrove and Leah Hunter, owners of successful dog daycare business The Houndry. Their company recently broke ground on the new location, and the owners are excited to see this dream come to fruition.
“The Backyard will provide a unique place for locals to gather with each other and drink from a variety of locally owned craft brews and nonalcoholic drinks, while their dogs can play off-leash in the safe, supervised space around them,” Lovegrove and Hunter said.
The TSBDC at Roane State Community College began working with the two on their first business, The Houndry, in 2016 and has continued to support them through growth and expansion into their new business.
The revenue model for The Backyard will be based on memberships—daily, perhaps monthly, and yearly. Membership requirements will include proof of pet vaccinations and certain restrictions for a pet to be neutered or spayed. Annual memberships will come with perks, including discounts, treats, and a beer of the day.
The Backyard will offer birthday party rentals, movie nights, homemade dog treats, outdoor games for humans, dog yoga, Doodle Romps, dog adoption events, and Art in the Bark—supporting local artists by displaying art in or around the play areas. The art will preferably have practical applications (e.g., benches, things for the dogs to jump or play on, maybe art that provides shade or a fountain).
